Not really sure what would inspire someone to do this but I’m glad they did. On it’s simplest level the direct approach and obviousness of the statement made me smile but from a more academic point of view it’s difficult to imagine a more representative example of semiotics in practice. Spraycan Signified, Signifier anybody?

Many will argue that art often reflects closely the society in which it is created and some will also argue the merits of graffiti as an art form. Recently I came across an example in Leeds that perhaps represents this idea at it’s most grass roots level. I was fascinated to see that a general obsession with celebrity culture seems to have manifested it’s self in a DIY Sunset Strip style walk of fame. Maybe one of then will make it one day and the paving flag will become a tourist attraction, or maybe the graffiti removal team will get their first.
